Repeat Driving Under the Influence

FORT COLLINS DUI OFFENSES LAWYER

Repeat Driving Under the Influence Leads to More Severe Penalties

The state of Colorado, like most states in the US, takes a tough stand against drunk driving. The penalties for repeat driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while ability impaired (DWAI) conviction – which are severe even for a first offense – increase tremendously with second and subsequent DUI convictions. When you are facing DUI charges, it is even more important to get an experienced attorney who knows how to defend you against these charges.

Fort Collins DUI offenses attorney Leah Bishop has the experience and skill to defend you against a DUI or DWAI conviction. At Leah Bishop, L.L.C., we give our clients focused, in-depth representation. We will help you through the complicated and often intimidating criminal law process, and advocate for you throughout your case.

Mandatory Jail Time for Driving Under the Influence Convictions

Because Colorado wants to curb drunk driving, the state provides increasingly harsh penalties for multiple convictions of DUI:

  • Jail Time: For the first offense there is a minimum of five days jail with a maximum of up to one year in jail. Second offenses carry a minimum of ten days and a maximum of one year. For a third offense you will receive a minimum of 60 days in jail with a maximum of up to one year in jail.
  • Fines: Depending on the number of convictions, DUI fines could range in minimum from $600 to $1,000, with a maximum of up to $1,500.

With every subsequent DUI you face, it becomes increasingly crucial to hire a good DUI defense lawyer who can find any way possible to help you avoid conviction. Sometimes that is getting the case thrown out in the beginning because of police errors with the stop, search and seizure or roadside sobriety test errors. Sometimes it means negotiating with the prosecuting attorney or arguing the facts in court. As a former deputy district attorney with further experience as a DUI defense lawyer, Leah Bishop understands the sentencing laws, she knows how the other side plans the prosecution of DUI and DWAI, and she will do whatever it takes to defend you against these charges.
