Non-Traditional Families

At Leah Bishop, L.L.C., we are proud to represent non-traditional families, including gay and lesbian, transgender and unmarried couples. We believe that every person has the right to access the justice system without judgment or bias.

Client advocacy is our highest priority, and we are committed to helping our clients resolve their issues as quickly and effectively as possible. We will spend time learning about your unique situation and legal goals and recommend solutions that are customized to your needs.

Legal Solutions Tailored to Your Family’s Needs

Since the legalization of same sex marriage in Colorado, same sex couples now have all the rights and benefits of marriage. ¬†However, if marriage isn’t right for you, a domestic partnership agreement affords these couples some of the same rights as legally married couples without the legal entanglement of marriage. Our Fort Collins non-traditional family law attorneys can help you craft a domestic partnership agreement that outlines:

  • Property rights, including the right to an equitable distribution of property if the domestic partnership ends
  • Maintenance or support obligations if the domestic partnership ends
  • Child custody, visitation and support for any children adopted or born during the relationship
  • Hospital visitation rights

We can also assist you in drafting a domestic beneficiary agreement, which gives you many of the same rights as a domestic partnership agreement. However, a domestic beneficiary agreement is legally enforceable. Your agreement will become enforceable when it is filed with the county clerk and recorder’s office.

Our lawyers can help same-sex couples expand their family through adoption. We can also help them create estate planning tools that address the right to inherit and to make decisions about health care, including medical powers of attorney, wills and trusts.
