Adoption

Child Adoption Attorney in Fort Collins, Colorado

The state of Colorado has enacted laws enabling the adoption of children by stepparent, second parents, same-sex couples, and grandparents and/or other family members.

At Leah Bishop, L.L.C., we assist gay, lesbian and heterosexual couples, as well as grandparents in achieving adoptions. I can advise and assist you in matters involving:

  • Private and agency adoptions
  • Stepparent and second parent adoptions
  • Termination of parental rights
  • Grandparent adoption
  • Grandparent custody or visitation
  • Guardianship of minors

In a situation where adoption is not possible, I can handle all of the legalities pertaining to assisted reproductions with a private donor.

Call 970-224-5555 or contact the firm online for a consultation.

Assistance at All Stages of the Process

While the basic adoption process is relatively simple, there are a number of legal issues that must be resolved prior to an adoption. In addition, the state must be convinced that the proposed adoption will be right for the child.

I have extensive experience in all aspects of adoption and will work diligently to make your dream come true. In addition, I can provide family planning advice and services to address the unique needs of gays and lesbians.  Since the legalization of same sex marriage in Colorado, it is much easier for same sex couples to adopt a step-child.

Guardianships

In some instances, adoption may not be the best choice and a guardianship may be the best option. A guardianship allows the guardian to make decisions for the child, take the child to the hospital, put the child on his or her car insurance, and receive state assisted funds for the care of the child.

Advice and Guidance Regarding the Home Study

In cases involving some adoptions, Colorado requires that a home study be performed. The backgrounds of the prospective parents will be reviewed and approval for the adoption will be granted or denied. Why is there a need for a home study? The state places the highest priority on ensuring that the new living arrangements will be in “the best interest of the child”. The prospective parents will be interviewed by a representative of the Department of Human Services and background checks will be performed. In most cases, these are routine.

A child adoption is an event filled with hope and anticipation. Leah Bishop, L.L.C., will do everything possible to complete your adoption as quickly and as smoothly as possible.
